This past week, the Thoma Staff caught up with Dr. Benjamin Wagner, one of STAC’s most beloved psychology professors. Students report that his teaching style is unparalleled, sharing interesting and comical personal anecdotes to keep his classes engaged with the material he teaches. Dr. Wagner attended a small college, much like STAC, in Ohio for his undergraduate degree, and eventually went on to receive a Ph.D. in social psychology at Ohio State. He is currently one of the advisors for the Gender and Sexuality Alliance Club (GSA) on campus as well as the Psychology Club. Read on to find out more!

Thoma Staff: When did you start working at STAC, and what is the best part about your job?

Dr. Wagner: I started at STAC in the fall of 2013.  My favorite part about the job is working with students, either in class or in office hours.  Even just talking with students about issues they care about is great.  🙂

Thoma: What were both your favorite and least favorite classes in college?

Dr. W: Favorite class:  The Cognitive Neuroscience of Music

Least favorite class:  Small Group Communication

Thoma: What is your favorite college memory?

Dr. W: One Halloween I dressed up as an iguana.  That was a fun night!

Thoma: What was your first job?

Dr. W: Umm…..probably mowing my neighbor’s lawn as a teenager.

Thoma: Which app do you find yourself using most?

Dr. W: Facebook.  Or Twitter.  Or Instagram.  It’s a tossup.

Thoma: You just sold your tech startup for 10 million dollars! What’s the first thing you do with the money?

Dr. W: Get a professional driving service so I never have to drive a car again.

Thoma: Out of all the classes you teach, which would you say is your favorite?

Dr. W: They all have their moments.  Right now, I am really enjoying my new course in Psychology & The Law.

Thoma: If someone made a movie about your life, which actor would you pick to play you?

Dr. W: Hmm.  Not Rupert Grint.  That’s for sure.

Thoma: Are there any hobbies that people don’t know you have?

Dr. W:I talk about my hobbies all the time.  They include playing piano, watching horror movies, and cooking/baking.

Thoma: Do you have any current movie, TV, or music obsessions you want to mention?

Dr. W: After years of disliking her, I’ve come around to Taylor Swift.  1989 is NOT BAD.

Thoma: If you were a candy, what candy would you be?

Dr. W: Reese’s peanut butter cup

Thoma: What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Dr. W: What other people think of you is none of your business.
